For anyone who has Google'd "My Chemical Romance" these last few days, it seems that a simple search has devolved into a complete clusterfuck. Since the rumors broke about Gerard Way's marriage to Lyn-Z (Mindless Self-Indulgence) after this past weekend, the blogs/boards/forums have been chewing up bandwidth like a lawnmower at a DustBuster convention. The fandom appears to be divided into two general groups: those who see Mr. Way as out of control, and those who vow to believe in him no matter what he says or does. Add the recent blog wars to the mix, and chances are excellent that you'll walk away from the keyboard with one hell of a headache.
I am of the opinion that he is out of control. I've seen similar behaviors and mannerisms before, with other 'rock stars'. Needless to say, the ending is never pretty. But enough has been said (on both sides of the debate) concerning his love life, his bandmate's response (or lack thereof) to said love life, and his success or failure at avoiding addictive substances.
The question I keep coming back to ponder is, why Mr. Way?
What is it about him that makes so many people act & speak-post the way they do?
Yes, he's talented. Yes, he has a pretty face and rather attractive... attributes. But none of this explains the vast array of text sweeping the good ol' WWW these last few days.
I must admit, I'm a fairly recent convert to the My Chem machine. I've been away from the whole music scene for a few years, trying to focus on life after lyrics, drums and guitars. Until I heard "The Black Parade", I was rather successful at it. I missed "Bullets" and "Three Cheers" - yes, they're now part of my CD collection, but they've never saved my life.
I do not know Mr. Way personally, and I have no intention of becoming his judge, jury or executioner. However, I do hope everything turns out well for him -- my fear is that he may not be around to see it.
Disquiet expressed, too chicken-eyed to continue.
So long, and goodnight.

I know it's crazy! I thought this would all end as soon as school started when everyone would remember they have their own lives to worry about. But after the marriage I was like "fat chance."
I would also like to mention that I don't trust neither anyone or anything on the internet nor their so called "reliable sources." (Except official stuff obviously.) However I'm worried that if he is as fucked up as some people say he is and someone sees him who just happens to have a camera all the fans who saw him as flawless will turn on him instead of hoping that he gets his shit back together and continuing to appreciate the music they've always enjoyed.
I know people who attack anyone who tries to even suggest everything isn't going just ducky with him. I swear there are those who even see him as a religious figure but I am trying my best not to judge him nor speculate as to what is happening in his life, because he isn't some test subject or bug under a microscope. His life isn't for us to analyze. As long as the band doesn't break up/nobody dies/the music isn't affected before their 2009 album I couldn't care less what him and the rest of the band are doing now.
Ah well, I forgot to mention something. I think the reason why everyone is so fascinated with Gerard is that they think they can relate to him. Unlike people born into fame or those who were popular in high school, some see him as one of them who happened to become famous because he used to be an outcast. Whenever we see him bragging about the Umbrella Academy, being genuinely nice, blabbing on and on about comic books, or talking about overcoming depression, we just want to pat him on the head and say: "he's one of us." And when he calls himself a nerd or an outcast that feeling only grows stronger.
However when we see him sticking his hand in his pants, saying vain things, or talking about his girlfriend we think he's acting like the bitches in our high schools and our image of him shatters. We think he's personally letting us down.
It all comes down to seeing him as who we want him to be, not who he actually is, neither a hero nor an asshole but just a person who none of us really know.
God I write too much
Peace
Thank you for the explanation as to why this has turned into such a sideshow. I'm very glad that you took the time to write. :)
More than anything I'll admit that I fear about what might happen next. We know Gerard is not okay. He's a flawed man but yet, his problems and the band's problems are truly frightening me that I fear something worse might happen. No matter what, I will continue to support and give my love to him and the band but I have such a bad feeling about this. There is so much going on that my mind is filled with confusion and my emotions are split into two. I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens next...
Why do people care so much? I think I know why. Gerard is on that pedestal because he put himself there. He made himself the "savior of the broken the beaten and the damned" with all of his speeches and his preaching. He wanted to be thought of as someone to look up to, someone that kids should listen to. He wanted to be everyone's friend, he was the one who said he would never sell out, never turn "rock star." People care so devoutly because that's how he played his game.
That's what I think, anyway.
Kapunua, I agree with you 100%.
I think that deep down is the same high-school misfit who only wanted to be liked. Now that he has all that adoration, he's turning into exactly what he said he would never be - a rock star.
Given the chance, I don't know whether I would hug him or shake the shit out of him. All my smart-ass remarks aside, though, I do hope he'll be okay.
